BC Central Coast’s Road to Recovery

As recovery efforts continue, the BC Ministry of Transportation announced today that it has reconnected the battered stretch of Highway 20 that was washed out, flooded and covered with debris by flood waters last month. The road serves as the only overland route in to Bella Coola and the surrounding communities. For the last two weeks, supplies (including diesel for electric generators and turkeys for Thanksgiving) have been delivered via barge and helicopter.

Helicopters like this one, delivering bridge parts, have been a regular sight over the central coast region for the last two weeks.

The connection is tenuous, however, and there is still much work needed.  The ministry will pilot motorist convoys twice daily in each direction until repairs are more substantial. Crews have been working around the clock to redirect streams, stabilize slopes and reconstruct the road. “…the ministry and the maintenance contractor will continue to work 24 hours a day until full highway travel is restored,” said Transportation Minister Shirley Bond in statement to the press, “Thanks to all those residents for their care of each other and helping those who were stranded.” BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure
